The Gid Time Gig Guide: March 2018

If you didn’t already know, us folk here at BLINKCLYRO love gigs and, considering you’re reading this, we’re sure you do too. Having compiled concert listings for The Student Advertiser, which often tallies up over 200+ gigs in Glasgow & Edinburgh alone, we thought that to help you guys decide, as well as inform you of events taking part in other areas, we’d come up with this handy wee guide that’ll shine a light on events that you’ll be wanting to end up at barrier for.

Note: We don’t take requests for this series so don’t get in touch regarding this.

SAMAs Paisley Takeover @ Paisley Arts Centre, Paisley – 2-3/3/18

A jam-packed double event, the Scottish Alternative Music Awards (SAMAs) aren’t just organising some great panels and workshops but also making sure they don’t slack in the gig department: it wouldn’t be a definitive Paisley gig without disco rockers The Vegan Leather and shoegazers SWAY playing who will no doubt provide some stunning sets, in addition to Glasgow’s very own Pronto Mama making this takeover too tempting to turn down.

CLUB DECODE PRESENTS: PINK @ Nice N Sleazy, Glasgow – 5/3/18

It’s always exciting to see fellow up and coming sites make the jump into the live music realm and CLUB DECODE are doing that again, after more than a year of waiting, with two events in March: GLITTER will take place on the 22nd but for chronological order’s sake we’re focussing on PINK here though both nights are set to put the spotlight on some of Scotland’s finest indie music. It’ll be a night that will stand out, not just for how bright and glittery the encouraged attire will be.

Ayr Rise Festival @ Fury’s, Ayr – 24/3/1827540207_105050713635574_4334396787991975203_n.jpg

We’ve been holding out for a local music festival to come around and help the Ayrshire music scene. Welcome to the stage Ayr Rise Festival, a new (hopefully annual) event that will be showcasing some promising talent, some of which we’ve already covered such as The Mawb and Atlas Run. Running from 3-10pm, it’ll be a tight day that we hope will stay around for years to come.

Young Fathers @ Barrowlands, Glasgow – 24/3/18

If for some reason you can’t make it to Ayr on the 24th (who can blame with you how horrible the weather is) then Young Fathers sold-out show should be your next priority if you can manage to find someone that isn’t a tout selling a ticket. This unique hip-hop, pop outfit is, for this site’s money anyway, the best band Scotland has to offer at the moment and with their third LP building up to be their magnum opus, you owe it to yourself to get your arse to this show.

Phoenix w/ The Vegan Leather @ Barrowlands – 26/3/18

Before the support was announced for this gig, we were already pretty hyped for it: despite not covering their latest album, we can confirm that Phoenix are even better than they were back in their popularity boom back in 2009. With The Vegan Leather (oh hi again) brought along to get the crowd hyped, this will no doubt be a gig that you can undoubtedly enjoy but where, in a year or so, you can say you saw the Paisley act really breakout.

FRESH VID: Mac DeMarco Befriends Death On ‘One Another’

By Liam Menzies (@blnkclyr)

Jizz-jazz pioneer Mac DeMarco is no stranger to the, well, strange. While he may have got a lot more serious and mature on his latest album This Old Dog (review here), his latest music video for One Another shows that he’s still got a funny bone. Hyped up as a “fish out of water, buddy flick“, the Canadian rocker finds himself befriending none other than death itself with whom he has a great bond with but one major setback: they can look but cannot touch. The video, directed and written by Pierce McGarry even has its very own twist that I won’t spoil here, just go watch it down below. With hot reviews such as “Man the chemistry between the two leads is palpable on screen”  by a Professional Reviewer, DeMarco has his Oscar Bait ready.

LEAKED: New Kanye Tracks Drop Online

By Liam Menzies (@blnkclyr)

With the ever controversial rapper being rumoured to be working on his new record on the mountaintops, Kanye West has finally shown off some of his new nostalgia-glaced work, though not on the terms he might have expected.

Over the past hour, YouTube has been flooded with leaks with cuts off the long anticipated Turbo Grafx 16, the follow-up to 2016’s The Life of Pablo. The tracks in question both feature stellar appearances with A$AP Rocky, Young Thug and Migos joining Yeezy on these teaser tracks. The links to the three songs are linked below though you better be fast as there’s no doubt execs will want these taken down immediately.

Kanye’s upcoming LP is set to feature sampling from a whole host of games including the likes of No More Heroes and Super Mario Galaxy in addition to hosting appearances from the likes of Kendrick Lamar and Chance The Rapper.

Sacramento Rockers Sages Are Back With ‘Close Your Eyes’

By Liam Menzies (@blinkclyro)

Hot off the back of re-releasing their Sleepwalker LP, Californian five-piece Sages haven’t let the creative juices fizzle with the reveal of new single Close Your Eyes. The band, best known for their ambiguous lyricism and visceral narrative, continue their staples traits on the newly released track: channeling a lot of influences (Deftones and Tesseract to name but a few), Sages manage to mix the new with the familiar enough to stop them from walking into a trodden path. According to Dino Vidovich of the band, the track has multiple interpretations:

In one context, it’s about a man who is broken over losing a loved one, and he wants to reconnect with her in his dreams, but she keeps telling him not to fall asleep, because she’s going to haunt him. It’s an interesting situation. However, It’s also symbolic of being spiritually guided to stay “awake” and not succumb to the illusions of desires and attachments.

Announcing a bunch of new tour dates alongside this track, Sages are beginning to kick their career into top gear thanks to some extensive coverage from the likes of Alternative Press and

Tour Dates:

May 27 @ Country Club Saloon – Loomis, CA
June 7 @ Powerhouse Pub – Folsom, CA
June 24 @ Blue Lamp – Sacramento, CA
August 4 @ Goldfield Trading Post – Sacramento, CA w/ Black Map
August 19  @ Starlite Lounge – Sacramento, CA

Capsize team up with Counterparts Frontman Brendan Murphy on new track ‘Tear Me Apart’

Southern Californian act Capsize have followed up their delightfully sick track XX (Sew My Eyes) with a new helping of post hardcore goodness in the form of Tear Me Apart. Assisted by vocalist Brendan Murphy of Counterparts fame, the tracks is for “anyone that has ever felt doubted or discouraged by their family or friends, while trying to pursue something that means everything to them,” says frontman Daniel Wand.

The song is yet another tease at Capsize’s sophomore follow up to their 2014 debut The Angst In My Veins which received mixed to positive reviews from critics though hasn’t hindered their enthusiastic fanbase. The band are currently on tour and a list of the dates can be found here where you can also purchase tickets.

A Reintroduction: The Essence of All That Surrounds Me, Capsize’s upcoming album,  will be released July 22 via Equal Vision Records and you can preorder it right here.

Are You Satisfied? Slaves Second LP Almost Finished

After taking 2015 by storm with a “do something with your life” mantra on their debut LP, Kent duo Slaves are set to release a follow up very soon.

Apologising about the last-minute cancellation of their Hairy Dog gig, which was set to take place tomorrow (April 28th), the band said on Facebook:

we are incredibly sorry but we are having to postpone until the 12th May. We have nearly got album 2 done but need an extra week to finish it. Thanks for your patience. Promise to play some new songs and some really old ones too! Xxx

The new date will precede a whole batch of appearances Slaves have planned for this summer, including appearances at Download, T in the Park, Novarock and Reading + Leeds.

So what do you make of this news? Personally I can’t complain as Are You Satisfied was one of the best albums I heard last year so the more, the merrier! Let me know what you think in the comments down below and follow this blog for more news and reviews.

New Drake Track Leaks Online Ahead Of Album Release

It seems like Drake can’t hold off potential leaks of his anticipated Views From The 6 as another new track has appeared online.

Faithful, which will appear on the Toronto rapper’s follow up to 2013 release Nothing Was The Same, features Aubrey and Chad Lamont Butler aka Pimp C, then late hip hop producer. The track is set to mirror the sound established on his 2011 album Take Care.

Drake hasn’t been silent about his admiration of  Pimp C. Speaking to MTV News back in 2010, Drake said:

I’m a huge Pimp supporter. I’m a huge Pimp fan. I feel like I’m extended UGK family. Bun and Pimp are like uncles, dads to me. They’re G’s. [When I’m around them], I feel like I do around my uncles.

This isn’t the first time this has occurred as it follows a string of leaks which include Controlla featuring Popcaan and a cover of a 1970’s song called These Days. Views From The 6 is set to be released this month which will feature Meek Mill diss track Summer Sixteen.

Jay Z Not Happy Over Tidal Purchase Lies

The rapper claims that former owners lied about the amount of users subscribed to the service

Hip Hop artist Jay Z is set to sue the former owners for $15 million over claims that they distorted their subscriber count.

Tidal, relaunched last year in a very cult like fashion with Kanye West, Arcade Fire and DEADMAU5, was bought for $56 million by Jay Z in January of 2015 and has since reached over 3 million subscribers as of this year. However, Jay Z has started a legal battle against previous owners Schibsted with a statement revealing why he has only just now decided to start these proceedings:

It became clear after taking control of Tidal and conducting our own audit that the total number of subscribers was actually well below the 540,000 reported to us by the prior owners.

On the defence’s side, Schibsted have disputed all of the claims made against them, stating that everything was on the table at the time of the acquisition.

We disagree with the accusations in the letter and any potential claims. We would like to point out that the company was listed on the stock exchange with everything that entails regarding transparent financial reporting.

Now that streaming has became the biggest source of U.S. recorded music revenue, more now than ever services like Tidal as well as Apple Music and Spotify are vital in providing the entertainment we enjoy. This isn’t the first time a streaming service has been involved in legal trouble and it certainly won’t be the last.

Heads Up: The Life Of Pablo Is Coming To A Streaming Service Near You!

Just two days after his first single from his seventh LP became available on Spotify and Apple Music, Kanye West is expected to break his promise by steaming it on platforms other than Tidal.

The Life of Pablo, released on Valentine’s Day this year, was stated to be exclusive to TIDAL with Kanye taking to Twitter to in another one of his recurring rants.

On top of releasing the album on Spotify and Apple Music, the controversial rapper will be tweaking TLOP yet again with a huge set of changes expected to come. There’s been some reworking such as Kanye doing over certain lyrics as well as significantly altering tracks like Feedback which will have “a beat overhaul and be significantly shorter.

While some have called this laziness and others creative genius (you can read my thoughts on it here), the updates have no doubt lead to the recent reveal of the album being streamed 25,000,000 times . Pitchfork reported yesterday, download codes were sent out to those who purchased tickets to watch West’s Madison Square Garden album premiere.

Brooker amused at Cameron coincidence

Writer Charlie Brooker has pointed out a coincidence between pig allegations against David Cameron and the first episode of his black comedy show Black Mirror.

Newswipe creator and host Charlie Brooker has pointed out coincidences between his show Black Mirror and allegations against David Cameron.

The allegations, that come from Lord Ashcroft’s new book about the Prime Minister, state that Cameron put a part of his anatomy in a pig. The book also states that Cameron smoked weed with friends while listening to rock bands.

The news was announced on Sunday Night (21 September) and resulted in #Piggate trending. Brooker was quick to point out the similarities between this and his show Black Mirror.

The first episode National Anthem revolved around the Prime Minister having sex with a pig in order to save a kidnapped princess. Black Mirrored debuted in 2011, less than 4 years before news of Lord Ashcroft’s claims broke out.

Brooker assured twitter that he had no knowledge of these allegations, stating “I’ve never heard anything about Cameron and a pig when coming up with that story. So this weirds me out”.

Brooker isn’t the only celebrity to acknowledge #Piggate. Former Smiths frontman Morrissey has called for David Cameron to resign if the allegations against him are true.

In a statement posted on True To You, a Morrissey fan site, he said “where have we seen other people in power misusing and sexually abusing corpses? A prime minister is supposed to protect the most vulnerable.” Posted on Tuesday (23rd of September), the statement was apparently sent on behalf of animal rights group Peta.

The Iain Duncan Smiths, a tribute band to The Smiths, have released a new song to capitalise on the news. The song titled “Pig’s Mouth Strikes again” is a cover of Bigmouth Strikes Again, released as a single by the band in 1986.
